Homeschool wins BEST!

BEST (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology)  had its annual competition on October 31, 2009 at Stubblefield Center on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Campus.  First place was won by Metro Homeschool of Blue Springs, Missiouri and they also won first place in the robot competition. Each team is judged by design and performance of their robots,  along with the  their project notebooks, table display, interviews, team web page, T-shirt design, spirit and sportmanship.

The mission of the  BEST competition is to inspire and encourage students in careers of science, technology and math through the sports like event, where the students discover their potential and expand their imagination.  Metro Homeschool beat out 14 other schools.  Students put in over 300 hours, in the last 12 weeks preparing for this fierce competition.

BEST started in 1993, when 2 engineers from Texas Instruments watched a video of a freshman class from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, build a robot.  The engineers Ted Mahler and Steve Marum were serving as guides for engineering day, for a group of  High School students.  These students were completely engaged in what they saw, then afterward Ted and Steve wanted to create the same thing.  With the approval of the Texas Instruments management, North Texas BEST was created.  Since its inception more and more schools have started BEST hubs. Currently there are 10,000 students and 35 hubs, in 15 states involved with BEST.  http://best.eng.auburn.edu/b_about_best.php
